Background: Toxicity testing of new drugs needs to be done to determine their efficacy and safety. Taro stem extract (Colocasia esculenta. (L) Schott) contains tannins, saponins, flavonoids, steroids and terpenoids, each of which has the potential to cure drugs.
Objective: This study aims to assess the acute dermal toxicity effects of taro stem extract on male wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus).
Method: The method used refers to the OECD Guidline for Testing of Chemicals - No. Test: 402, Acute Dermal Toxicity - LD50 cut off.
Result: The preliminary test started from doses of 200, 1000 and 2000 mg/KgBW and the main test was carried out up to a dose of 2000 mg/KgBW, both of which showed no irritation response or death of the test animals..
Conclusion: The conclusion of the irritation index scoring = 0, prove that taro stem extract does not cause skin irritation such as erythema and edema, the LD50 value of taro stem extract (Colocasia esculenta. (L) Schott) is ˃2000 mg/kgBW, included in the unclassified category 5, namely low toxicity and safe for topical use.
